Nuclear energy: yesterday, today, tomorrow?

Child of the 80s, I never thought that in 2009 I will take part in anti-nuclear activities. But that is the reason why I came to Finland last week. Till July 26 "Nuclear Climate Camp" will be my home.

Finnish government is considering building of new nuclear power plants, sereval of them - in Lapland. Lapland and nuclear plant sounds weird enough to pay people`s attention. Put together with risks to the environment it has gathered people from the whole Finland and many other countries.

We do different kinds of activities in our camp: seminaries, discussions, information sharing... Also we communicate with the local people. On July 22 we went to the streets of Simo and Kemi to talk straight to them.

We showed a performance about what nuclear power plant in their city may do to their lives and spread flyers. A banner "Myyty uraanikapitaalismi" was put on the city hall. There were not too many people so our visit was kinda quiet.

Visit to Kemi was more exciting. At first we showed the performance and then went to the streets. We had not warned the police about our protest action so they stopped us and asked us go back to our bus. In the end, we had to change our route but at least we did the main thing: payed attention.

I consider that day productive and hope that rest of the camp will be the same. Nuclear energy was trendy in the middle of 20th century but it is totally old fashioned in 21st century. Let`s discover the potential of wind, water and sun energy!
